About Tekla BIMsight

Image 1Tekla BIMsight is a free software program that allows the combination of any BIM software models; providing you with a complete model. This allows the sharing of information in the same 3D environment.

With Tekla BIMsight you can:
   • View and navigate 3D models
   • Combine model from different disciplines
   • Check for clashes
   • Measure dimensions and clearances
   • Redline/markup the model
   • Attach comments
   • Link documents to an object

When viewing comments you can sort them by trades or categories, and even view flags in the model that relate to the comments.

Tekla BIMsight in Action

Tekla BIMsight has proven very popular around the world, with tens of thousands of
people in the construction industry using it. Some examples of which are detailed below.

HNTB were chosen to design the State Route 99 project, a replacement for the
Alaskan Way Viaduct section of State Route 99 along Seattle’s waterfront.
For this project HNTB chose Tekla BIMsight because it allowed them to:
  • easily combine models from all disciplines
  • view models with smooth navigation features
  • capture areas of interest with ease

In BIM collaboration, HNTB utilized the model in weekly all-discipline coordination
meetings to discuss the two buildings, cut and cover areas, and the tunnel with the
sub-contracts, architects, and engineers. With all of the discipline models loaded into
Tekla BIMsight, HNTB and project participants were able to see conflicts and possible
design changes.

The Tekla BIMsight feature HNTB found
most useful in this project was the ability to
quickly cut sections and turn off pieces of
the model to clearly see the interworkings
of the design within the model.

Peab Sverige AB is the general contractor of Mall of Scandinavia, destined to be the

largest shopping centre in Scandinavia when it opens in late 2015. Being the general
contractor involves coordinating up to eight project parties, with responsibilities like
steel construction, concrete elements, HVAC, fire protection, and architectural design.
To handle this task Mikael Kastel, BIM coordinator for Peab, chose Tekla BIMsight.

Tekla BIMsight allows Mikael Kastell to:
  • Put together about 150 models created with various software solutions
  • Divide design and construction into eight different phases, allowing different tasks
to go on simultaneously

“I tested other construction cooperation
and clash checking software solutions
but chose the free one, Tekla BIMsight,
because of its several beneficial
functionalities,” Kastell says.

Pozzoni LLP, an architect in the UK, chose to use Tekla BIMsight to bring together the Architectural and Steel Fabrication models to ensure the continuity of the design intent as well as for clash detection. This process was proven successful in the Waverley Borough Council project (Surrey) because of the building’s entrance façade with acurved wall forming the corner of the studio.

The first steel fabrication model, when coordinated with the Architectural model was
found to have not fully picked up the curved nature of the façade. The model in Tekla
BIMsight showed purlins puncturing the curving parapet. This problem was resolved
by collaboration between the Architect and the Steel Fabricator, exchanging several versions of the model.

Image 4Using Tekla BIMsight to solve these problems in the model stage saved a significant potential cost. More importantly, the changes did not have to be made 15-20 meters up after installation which would have brought about plenty of safety issues.

Engineering office Aaro Kohonen Oy was chosen as BIM coordinator for a process
factory extension project in Helsinki, Finland. The project parties agreed to use Tekla
BIMsight and to deliver their models in Tekla BIMsight compatible formats.
The project parties used Tekla BIMsight for conflict checking functions, cross-checking
each model with every other model for clashes. Conflicts were saved in snapshots. They
also found the clip plane tool very helpful in communicating issues with others.

“Tekla BIMsight is easy to use and learn.
Even designers without experience of 3D
modeling learnt it quickly.”
Samu Ristolainen, BIM Coordinator,
Aaro Kohonen
